Controlling Asymmetry: Radical-Polar Crossover and Other Strategies for Synthesis of Bioactive Compounds

报告内容简介:Ubiquitously decked on the surfaces of all cell types in nature, carbohydrate molecules play central roles in the development, cooperation and vitality of an organism. There are two major impediments to the rapidly growing field of molecular glycobiology: 1) the lack of pure, structurally defined complex oligosaccharides and glycoconjugates; 2) the lack of the methods for biological studies. Deciphering sugar codes becomes feasible as synthetic methods and biological evaluation protocols are established.

The research program in our group integrates glycochemistry and glycobiology. A special emphasis is placed on training and research in carbohydrate and glycoprotein synthesis and on the utilization of this expertise in addressing problems of medicinal and biochemical significance. In this talk, I’d like to share with you our recent progress on glycosylation methods and their use in oligosaccharide and glycoprotein synthesis.

个人简介:Synthesis of stereochemically complex organic compounds continues to present opportunities to develop greater efficiency, with the long-term goal of environmentally friendly and sustainable synthetic methods.  This lecture will discuss the development of a new combination of asymmetric radical addition reactions with polar transformations, in the same flask. This achieves successive bond constructions using two different types of reactivity, leading to chiral heterocyclic amines.  New strategic innovations for stereo controlled synthesis of 1,5-polyols will also be discussed.

报告人简介:Gregory K. Friestad,博士,美国艾奥瓦大学化学系副教授。1990年在美国Bradley大学获理学学士学位;1995年在美国俄勒冈大学获理学博士学位,导师Bruce P. Branchaud教授;1995-1998年在美国宾夕法尼亚大学任NIH博士后研究员,导师Amos B. Smith III教授;1998-2005年在美国佛蒙特大学化学系任助理教授和副教授2005年至今任现职。研究领域为有机化学,包括C=N自由基加成反应方法研究、1,5-多醇不对称合成、生物活性天然产物全合成等方向。
